I am Dutch and really started to hate the word awesome now it is being used so much and for everything. Like there are no other words to say something is good. Let me mention a few and remember English is not my language.
Beautiful, nice, fantastic, great, delicious, tasty, lovely, sweet, gorgious.
Awesome sounds so unbelievable stupid that it turns everything into loathsome.

i'm watching a tutorial about how to build websites. the guy keeps saying 'awesome' whenever he's done almost anything. returned a variable, built a simple function, printed something to the screen...

its getting really annoying. these are simple commands. they are not awesome in any way

Thank all of you. I'm a writer by profession, so you can only imagine how sickened to death I am by the abuse of the word 'awesome'; especially since it was once a one of a kind descriptive, in that its very intonation was linked to its meaning. However, I think this may have broader implications for how politically correct America waters everything down -except for the lawn; we leave that for the illegals to do.)

Whenever I hear the word "awesome" I want to scream! It tells that the person using the word (almost everyone these days) lacks basic verbal skills. Whatever happened to thinking before opening the mouth? I first saw the word in an old DATSUN print commercial and didn't think anything of it. That was around '83 or '84. Now I hear it all day long. To me, using awesome, is like carrying a sign that says, "I'm stupid, have no original ideas, and will say whatever the last dolt just said".

I left the US in 2000. About 2002 I started hearing this word when talking/emailing with American friends, and I noticed it all the more because no one in my "real" life (in the UK at the time) was usin it. By 2003 I noticed that it was at every-other-word level amongst Americans. By 2005 my American mother was using it. By best guest is that the everyday American vernacular embraced it around 2001.What I hate most about it is how people seem to be impressed with themselves when they're using it, as if they're being cool or cheeky or cutting edge. I am proud to say that I have never used it - and never will.

So glad to find more 'awesome'phobic people in here. Thought I was the only one who cringed when inanimate items, abstract ideas, people... and what not were addressed with the same beaten-to-death word. I do the count sometimes when I am with people who use this word on an hourly basis .. its got that bad.
